Warm-Up
- 1000 Day’s: What has challenged or encouraged you this week as you have started the 1000 Day’s devotional book?
- When you hear the words “I want to change,” what is the first area of your life that comes to mind? Why do you think that area stands out?
Know It
Read Luke 5:1-11 as a group. Discuss any questions or observations you have.
- Who are the main people in this passage, where are they, and what is happening when Jesus first encounters Simon?
- Why is it significant that Jesus enters Simon’s ordinary workplace and exercises authority there?
- What happens after the miraculous catch, and what does Jesus say and do in response to Simon’s reaction? How does Simon ultimately respond?
Own It
- In verse 5 Simon responds with ‘But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” but in verse 6 it says ‘when they had done so’. What does this tell us about how our decisions of change influence others around us?
- The miracle happened after Simon obeyed. How can we distinguish between simply wanting Jesus to change our lives and actually responding when Jesus gives us a next step?
- What do you think Simon had to overcome internally to say yes to Jesus? How can you relate with the Simon’s…
Disappointment?
Doubt?
Cynicism?
Exhaustion?
Pride?
Fear?
Next Steps
- Jesus meets us in our ordinary days and invites us in to take our next step. Peter’s first step wasn’t leaving everything behind. His first step was letting Jesus use his boat. What does that teach us about how Jesus often begins changing our lives?
- Which one of these might be your next small yes? Write down one thing you can do this week to move forward with your next step?
