Read John 21:1-6
1 “Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. 2 Several of the disciples were there— Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. 3 Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. 4 At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. 5 He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” No,” they replied. 6 Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.”
- Have you found yourself working really hard at something and things did not go the way you would like or had planned?
- Seven of the disciples went out to fish, led by Simon Peter. In the absence of Jesus they could have been unsure about what was next for them and it is believed that they were returning to what they knew. Why do you think Jesus went to them and asked them if they had caught any fish? Why didn’t Jesus reveal himself right away?
- Are there any areas of your life that you have stepped back into some old ways?
- Vs 6 says, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.” Christ made himself known to them and asked them to follow Him into something new. Is there something God is asking you to do? How can you rely on God instead of yourself?
Take a moment as a group to read through these last points, they are a good reminder of the HOPE we have in Christ. His love and grace are for YOU.
I’m wandering around and I don’t know where I’m going – Jesus is the way.
I’m confused and I don’t know what to think – Jesus is the truth.
I’m dead and I don’t know if I can go on – Jesus is the life.
(John 14:6)
