Romans 12:3
For by the grace given to me, I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Proverbs 16:5
The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.
Proverbs 16:18
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 11:2
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 22:4 The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
Proverbs 29:23
One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.
Matthew 22:36-39
Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”, And he said to him, “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Philippians 2:3
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.
1. Pride deceives, divides and destroys. What is one way have you seen this reality in your life or in the lives of those around you?
2. Take one day this week to write down your thoughts. Are there any thoughts (or actions) that give evidence of pride in your life, either in the way of arrogance or insecurity?
3. Justin encouraged us to take the focus off of self and onto God and others. What is one practical way you can begin to shift a mindset of “better than” to one of humility, where we truly love others well? (i.e. apologizing first, resisting the urge to be right blame, speaking life over someone)
