Read Genesis 39, or use the teaching passages below to guide your discussion.
Genesis 39:2-3
2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,
Genesis 39:20-21
20 But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
Genesis 39:23
The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
1. We see in the verses above that the Lord was with Joseph, but what kinds of questions might Joseph have had for God after being sold into slavery and put in prison? When you face uncertainty and the unexpected, what are some of your tendencies and how might they affect those around you?
Genesis 39:4
Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.
Genesis 39:22
So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.
2. Joseph’s story spans over many years and his hardships, prosperous moments and lessons all run together. After hearing and/or reading about his life, what promises did God give to Joseph? In what ways can you see earlier circumstances, hardship and the unexpected prepared him for how God used him later in life?
3. What difficult times or growing experiences have you faced that have given you the strength and abilities for where you are today?
4. What can this season be for you, meaning what is God doing in these moments?
