Wednesday Night Discussion Questions
Series: This is Our Story
Topic: Part 1 – Abraham and Isaac
Speaker: Nathan Sell, Middle School Pastor
Date: March 1, 2023
Overview:
Over time, the Old Testament has been discounted as old and unrelatable; however, this could not be further from the truth. The Old Testament, while historical, is filled with application that is pertinent to our lives today. The story of Abraham and Isaac is one that, on the surface, may not seem too applicable. After all, nobody is having a son at 100 years old, and we certainly don’t know of any modern accounts where God has asked someone to sacrifice their son. So how is this story applicable? In this message, we explored the patience that Abraham and Sarah displayed as they waited on the promises of God to be fulfilled. We also discussed the obedience and faithfulness to God that Abraham had, despite being asked to give up his son whom he treasured immensely. Are we willing to wait on God to work in our lives? Do we want a relationship with God more than we want the blessings He gives? Are we willing to sacrifice anything in our lives if it means following Him in faithfulness? It seems like the story of Abraham and Isaac could also be our story.
Discussion Questions:
- What are some of the promises of God? What promises do you need to remember, personally?
- How can blessings become idols in our lives? How do we make sure that we are desiring our relationship with God MORE than the blessings themselves?
- As a middle school student, what is your purpose? What does it look like to be obedient and faithful to God as a student?
- How can we see that “God is faithful to keep His promises” through this story?
