Matthew 4:19-20
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

  1. We are closing this series, ‘The Way’, discussing sabbath. As we consider the immediacy of the disciples in the verse above, what needs immediate attention in your life – where in your life are you feeling depleted or burned out?

Read through the scripture below:

1 John 2:5-6
This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Exodus 20:8-9
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.

2. God wants us to come to him, to take rest and remember the sabbath. After reading through the text above, why do you think God wants this for us?

3. Sabbath is a gift, an opportunity to build a habit and be intentional. Which of the action steps below can you apply this week and what specifically will that action be? Try to add one each week.

Action Steps:
-Pick a day
-Plan ahead
-Do it together

A Psalm for the sabbath — Psalm 92:12-15
12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
13 planted in the house of the Lord,
they will flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green,
15 proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”
