Wednesday Night Discussion Questions
Series: The Beatitudes
Topic: Part 3— Justice and Mercy
Speaker: Nathan Sell, Middle School Pastor
Date: November 2, 2022
Overview:
What comes to mind when you hear the words “Justice” and “Mercy”? Often times, with justice, we associate it with someone getting what they deserve. Mercy tends to be something that we are usually better at receiving than giving. In Matthew 5, Jesus says that we are blessed when we “hunger and thirst for justice” and “show mercy”. While completely counter-cultural, Jesus is saying that we can live a fulfilled life if we desire to treat others with fairness and respect, and if we show people forgiveness even when they don’t deserve it.
Discussion Questions:
- In today’s world, what do you think “justice” is? What are some examples that we would associate with “justice”?
- When we look at the idea of justice in Scripture, how does it differ from the way culture describes it?
- How has God, ultimately, shown us mercy? Why do you think God desires for us to show mercy to others?
- What makes it easy to ask for mercy, but difficult to show it to other people?
