By holding onto the things of this world I can’t fully serve and experience the peace that comes with following Christ.

Acts 13:1-12

Scripture

…the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. Acts 13: 2

Observation

When I am called to do God’s work, I need to be separated from the things of this world that can keep me from seeing His purpose. I can confuse my own pursuits with those of God if I are not intentional about setting my sights on Him, and Him alone. I need to be free to hear God’s call.

Application

Lord, I desire to follow you fully, but I continue to believe the lie that I need to be in control of the things in my personal life. I need a constant reminder that by holding tightly to the things of this world, I can’t fully serve you and experience the peace that comes with following you with ALL that I am.

Prayer

“Heavenly Father, thank you for making it so clear in your word that you want me for your work. Please let me drop my attachments to my own work and reveal to me the ways I can be used for your kingdom. Please let me feel satisfied, and not uncomfortable, when I release control of the things that I think give me significance and purpose. Thank you Lord for your patience as I work on this area of my faith and grow closer to you. Amen.”

Now You Try

Read Acts 13:13-52

Scripture

Get to a place where you can focus and read the daily Scripture passage several times. Take time to read and allow God to speak to you. Write down the one or two verses that stick out. Even consider rewriting the verse(s) in your own words.

Observation

Make a basic observation about the scripture you just read. What stood out? Was something repeated? What is the author trying to communicate? What does the Scripture passage teach you about God? What does it teach you about humanity?

Application

Ask, “What does this verse(s) mean for my life?” How might this verse affect your heart — how you feel? How does this verse challenge your thinking? How does it affect your will, asking, “What changes do I need to make in my life as a result of this passage of Scripture?”

Prayer

Write out a prayer to God. Scripture is God speaking to you, take this moment to speak back. Take a moment to say, “Thank you,” confess to Him what needs to change, or ask for something that is on your heart.
