1 Samuel 22:1-2 – So David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam…All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.

Psalm 142:1-7 – I cry out to the Lord; I plead for the Lord’s mercy. I pour out my complaints before him and tell him all my troubles. When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn. Wherever I go, my enemies have set traps for me. I look for someone to come and help me, but no one gives me a passing thought! No one will help me; no one cares a bit what happens to me. Then I pray to you, O Lord. I say, “You are my place of refuge. You are all I really want in life.” Hear my cry, for I am very low. Rescue me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me. Bring me out of prison so I can thank you. The godly will crowd around me, for you are good to me.

1. In the passage above David is on the run and fighting for his life for years before becoming king. How does he demonstrate leadership in the passages above and throughout this story?

Matthew 9:36-38 – When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

John 13:4-5 & 15 – so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him… I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

2. Leading is more about serving and influence than position and there are times in our lives when God calls us to lead but it is not always immediate. Sometimes there is a slow progression of God preparing us. In what ways have you experienced God calling you to lead and serve only to pause where you have had to surrender and go through a season of preparation?

3. Leadership can look different for each of us throughout our lives. Who is looking to you and who is in your natural sphere of influence? How can you or are you serving and leading right where God has you?
