Message Series // My House Part 3 (The Local Church)
Message Date // March 7, 2021 (Pastor Jamie Heiner)
Big Idea
As we finish the series, we want to end with this idea that part of our house is the local church. In the midst of the digital age and being able to watch church services and preachers from all over the world, we cannot forget how important it is to be a part of a local church. We need a spiritual family…a spiritual team…that we can belong to. We also need to have a place where we can play the God-given role He has for us…a way to contribute to the church family with our giftings, abilities, and passions.
“Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” – Romans 12:4-5
Discussion
Read Acts 2:42-47 and take a look at one of the first historical expressions of the local church. With so many ways we can connect spiritually through books, podcasts, and online worship services, the bottom line is that we can never out local the local church. In your eyes, is the local church still relevant and important today? From your perspective, what is the value of the local church?
Read Romans 12:4-13. These verses paint such a great picture of how the church can function together. The truth is that the whole body matters, and also every individual part of the body matters. Everybody in the church matters. Everyone on the team matters. And God made you exactly who He wants you to be in order to play the role you were specifically supposed to fulfill. Why is it so critical that everyone in the church understand the role they are supposed to play? What are different ways we can find out the role God wants us to play? What do you believe God has designed you for?
At Journey, when it comes to serving and fulfilling your role, it’s about what we want FOR you, not what we want FROM you. How are you currently engaging in the local church? What are some of the things that are keeping you from engaging in the way you want, or in the way God has created you to be?
Next Steps
Read Ephesians 2:10. The picture image given in this verse is one of an art masterpiece. In other words, you are a masterpiece created by God. This doesn’t mean you are perfect or that you don’t have struggles…but what it does mean is that God created you to fulfill a role and play a part that only you can. What are some ways you can serve Journey or the local church you are a part of?
