Matthew 14:29-33
29 Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Matthew 16:22-23
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

Matthew 26:74-75
Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

1. In the passages above it is evident that Peter was a man with struggles similar to what we face today. He was full of trust, doubt, speaking out abruptly, denying truth and getting ahead of Jesus. Have you had times where you have experienced some sort of failure?

2. After Peter denied Jesus and realized what he had done, he went back to his old way of life which was fishing. Discuss why he may have chosen this path. How have you handled your own failures in life?

Read John 21:12-19.

3. Despite our failures, God comes after us and wants to use each of us to show the world His love. Discuss what is taking place in John. Why did Jesus ask Peter three times if he loved Him?

4. Scotty wrapped up his message by reminding us of the heart of God. It is never too late, you are not too far and it is not over. Jesus said to Peter, “follow me!” This is God’s grace for us and good news! Peter then went on to spread the gospel and changed lives! What can you do to take a step forward in believing God loves you and wants to use you?
